Fort Mifflin to be featured in Ghost Hunters spin-off
On August 25, 2009, readers who identified themselves as “NJ Fans of GH” posted comments on the article page for “House of Mudd.” They wrote about a chance encounter with TAPS tech manager, Steve Gonsalves, at a Philadelphia eatery the previous week. According to the posting, Gonsalves told them of a Ghost Hunters spin-off, involving himself and TAPS member Dave Tango, which would feature a location from the original show’s fourth season. Gonsalves offered no further information regarding the location, other than to say that the fans would “crap their pants.”
Nearly a year ago, on October 23, 2008, TV Guide reported that Syfy would launch a spin-off called Ghost Hunters: College Edition. A press release from the same date by Syfy confirmed the report and indicated that the show would feature “college students, lead by seasoned investigators, who search for the paranormal in haunted hot spots.” Are we to assume, in light of his recent remarks in Philadelphia, that Gonsalves and Tango will be the “seasoned investigators” to lead the co-eds?
With regard to the location, another reader also posted a comment on August 25 after having spoken to an anonymous source at the Greater Philadelphia Film Office who confirmed that the Ghost Hunters spin-off was being filmed at Philadelphia’s Fort Mifflin, a rather active location investigated during season four of Ghost Hunters. The reader, identified as “Ghost Hunters Fan Club of PA,” explained later that an employee at Fort Mifflin, asking not to be named, would neither confirm nor deny that Gonsalves and Tango “were here today.” When asked directly whether the new show would be filmed at the historic site, the employee replied, “just wait and see.”
Viewers may be interested to see how Ghost Hunters: College Edition will comare with A & E’s Paranormal State, a show about a paranormal research society founded by college students. The team featured in Paranormal State frequently incorporates psychics or mediums into its investigations, which often leads to findings that are largely anecdotal in nature. TAPS, on the other hand, has traditionally been consistent in an investigative approach that is concerned with hard data and empirical evidence. Basically, that means no psychics, a lot of technology, less interpretation, and more critical analysis.
Though fans and core viewers of Ghost Hunters will be keeping an eye on how closely Gonsalves and Tango remain adherent to the fundamental standards of TAPS’ philosophy in the upcoming series, they will also be watching for what makes the new show different. Some viewers may be looking forward to a good pants-crapping as well.
